Attorney Releases Statement on Behalf of Macon Mother Charged in House Fire

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – In a written statement, Colethia Williams’ attorney Reza Sedghi calls the murder charges against his client “tragic”.

Williams is charged with felony murder, child cruelty and felony false statements after three of her four children died in a house fire in February. Her youngest child was injured during the fire, but survived.

For the first time, since Williams’ arrest, her attorney Sedghi said:

“There are no words that can describe the grief and pain that my client is feeling at this moment. Colethia deeply cared for her children and raised them by herself without any help. She was thrilled when she was able to finally get approved to purchase a house on James Street where they could live. It is extremely tragic that three of her child lost their lives because of a fire that consumed the home. We are thankful to God that one of children is alive and doing well. It is also equally tragic that the District Attorney’s office has chosen to charge her with murdering her children, a crime that she did not commit.”

According to fire investigators, Williams was not at home when the fire broke out. Police records and Williams’ arrest warrant states that she admitted she was at her boyfriend’s house at the time of the fire.

The warrant also states that Williams left her children home unsupervised “long enough for a structure for fire to engulf the residence and cause excessive pain to all four children.”

Daija, Nykhia, and Jammarrian died in the blaze, 3-year-old J’lon survived.
