Atrium Health Navicent introduces new technology to diagnose lung cancer
Atrium Health Navicent cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Anthony Holden, says the new ION Robotic Bronchoscopy procedure has been in use over the past 5 months and helped 75 patients.
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Atrium Health Navicent has been using a new minimally-invasive procedure to diagnose lung cancer.
Atrium Health Navicent cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Anthony Holden, says the new ION Robotic Bronchoscopy procedure has been in use over the past 5 months and helped 75 patients.
The new procedure allows physicians to examine the airways of the lungs to diagnose lung cancer and other lung diseases such as infections and inflammatory conditions.
Dr. Holden says that this procedure is important and helps detect cancer early.
According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), lung cancer is the second most common cancer in the United States.
In Georgia, the ACS estimates that there will be 7,350 new cases of lung cancer diagnosed in 2024, a number that’s above the national average.
Dr. Holden says if a biopsy does test positive for cancer, then surgical resection, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and immunotherapy are offered at the Atrium Health Navicent Peyton Anderson Cancer Center.
