Ask Angi: Grass free lawn
(41NBC/WMGT) — If you’re tired of spending hours every week taking care of your grass, it might be time to switch things up. Rupa Mehta, an outdoor home expert at Angi, is here to show us some grass-free lawn alternatives.
“Consider covering your yard with plants,” said Mehta “Moss and clover grow quickly and require little to no maintenance. Native perennial plants are also a great idea. They help to feed local pollinators, and the great thing about them is when you transition between cold to warm weather seasons, you have to do very little – they grow back on their own, they grow stronger each year and hardier each year. If you need help, contact a local pro to help you design a low-maintenance plan that works for you.”
Natural landscape lawns are becoming more popular, but they still aren’t accepted everywhere. Make sure to check with your HOA before making any changes to your lawn. Some neighborhoods have very strict guidelines, so you need to make sure you’re allowed to make changes before you start the planting process.
“For conservation, consider a rock garden. They require no water, little maintenance, and they’re perfect for dry climates and busy families. You can customize them with drought-resistant plants, such as cacti, to add a pop of color and some greenery.” said Mehta
Don’t forget to customize your space to fit your specific needs. If you like the look of the traditional grass lawn in your front yard, but want something lower maintenance in your backyard, keep the grass in your front and install a rock garden in your backyard.
“For the look of grass without maintenance, consider turf. It’s great year-round, there’s less upkeep because it doesn’t grow and it’s great for kids to play on. However, it does require regular cleaning and maintenance if you have pets.” said Mehta
