Anti-Gay Church Sign Stirs Up Controversy in Milledgeville

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A church sign condemning homosexuality is stirring up controversy in Milledgeville.

The sign off of U.S. 441 outside of the Society for the Ten Commandments church reads, “Homosexuality is a death worthy crime.” The strong statement is turning heads in the community.

“It upsets me because it gives Christianity a bad name and Christianity is not about hate” said Theresa Jackson, a Milledgeville resident.

“It makes me feel a little bit unsafe,” said Steve Thompson, a student at Georgia College, “but I don’t think it’s right to keep him from saying it.”

Legally, Lee’s marquee is within the city’s code of ordinances and this isn’t the first time his signs have turned heads. In the past, he’s had signs that read “People mixed up about their gender should not be leaders” or “Gays and lesbians are disgraces to humanity”. He stands behind his beliefs and has no plans on taking the sign down.

“Homosexuality is an abomination,” said Society for the Ten Commandments Pastor Robert Lee, “I know that God hates gays.”

The pastor has a devoted following of members and active supporters in an online community. The non-denominational church of 11 members has been up and running for three years.

“We are really none other than disciples of Christ,” Lee said, “there is not one person that can point to anything that Lord Jesus Christ stated in favor of homosexuality.”

The sign is just miles away from the county line and many residents feel it’s a bad representation of the city. As for Lee, he thinks the town needs a lesson in homosexuality and the teachings lie in the lines of the Holy Bible.
