Alumnus Leaves $14.4 Million to Emory University

ATLANTA – An Emory University alumnus has left his alma
mater $14.4 million to provide financial aid to students.

James E. Varner Jr., who graduated with an economics degree in
1943, left the bulk of his estate to the Emory College of Arts and
Sciences for student support.

The money will go to the Emory Advantage financial aid program,
which was established in 2007 to help qualified undergraduates from
families whose total annual income is $100,000 or less.

Varner was a successful Atlanta banker for nearly four decades
and believed that his Emory education helped him achieve financial
success. He died last March 6.

During the current academic year, Emory Advantage provided more
than $6.3 million in financial aid to students.
