Almost $70,000 raised for Macon homeless shelter
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A special announcement was held today at the Daybreak homeless shelter in Macon.
A total of $68,598.05 was raised for the shelter thanks to the Sleepout charity event which was held this past February. Participants of the event made a monetary donation and slept under the stars of Central City Park in order to experience what it would be like not having a home.
The honorary chairman of the event was Chuck Leavell, the renowned musician who just got back from touring with the Rolling Stones in Cuba. He believes the problem of homelessness is a global concern.
“Well, you know what, I’m fortunate to get to travel all over the world and you see this issue in just about every city you go in,” he said. “It ebbs and flows, it’s worse in some places and better in others but it exists almost everywhere and it’s something we can all do something about. We can help, we can volunteer, we can donate, and I would encourage everyone out there listening to do all of those things.”
Next year’s Sleepout will be held on February 23rd.
