Alexander II Magnet School celebrates opening of new outdoor classroom
PTA-led project brings new learning space to life

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Students and staff at Alexander II Math and Science Magnet School celebrated the opening of a brand-new outdoor classroom Thursday afternoon.
The project was made possible through the school’s Parent Teacher Association, which led fundraising efforts beginning in October 2024. Construction on the classroom started in April of this year. The new space gives students a hands-on environment to explore math and science lessons while enjoying the outdoors. Rosio Garcia, PTA president, said the idea came from wanting to create a space where all students could thrive.
“The biggest vision was, what can we do to get them outdoors so they’re not in the school all day? The kids are able to have a safe haven space. The teachers are able to have a mental break if they need it outdoors and just a space to recharge, have learning happening, and just for the students to relax in the natural outdoor space,” Garcia said.
Principal Donna Cline said the outdoor classroom will tie directly into the school’s STEM-focused curriculum and provide new opportunities for hands-on learning. Thursday’s event marked the official dedication of the new space, which students will begin using immediately.
