Alex Honnold completes record-breaking rope-free climb of Taipei 101

(NBC)- For viewers watching the livestream at home, it was a death-defying, nerve-shredding, edge-of-the-seat experience.
High above the streets of Taipei, Alex Honnold completed a historic climb — scaling Taipei 101, a 101-story skyscraper standing 1,667 feet tall, without ropes. The climb, streamed live on Netflix, had never been done untethered before.
Unfazed by the height, the 40-year-old American climber — best known for the Oscar-winning film Free Solo — appeared calm and exhilarated throughout the ascent.
“This is so cool,” Honnold said during the climb, pausing to admire the view over Taipei as crowds watched from below and inside the tower.
The climb took 95 minutes, requiring total focus as Honnold moved steadily upward, sometimes climbing without using his hands, at other moments hanging freely in open air. At the 60th floor, the father of two even checked in with his wife, Sanni, before continuing toward the summit.
Despite the danger, Honnold showed little sign of fear or exhaustion when he reached the final spire.
“It’s kind of like a happy tired,” he said, adding that staying present was the greatest challenge of the climb.
At the top, with enough energy left to snap a victorious selfie, Honnold reflected on the feat, saying it was far less frightening to stand on the building than to climb its side.
At the summit, Honnold shared one final word to mark the moment: “Sick.”
