MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Experiencing Black history behind the wheel of an Electric Vehicle. That’s the message from AAA as the company kicked off Black History Month with their EV Road Trip Guide.

The road trip goes through different historical cities throughout Georgia and South Carolina. The road map provides charging station locations for those driving an EV. One of those stops is in Macon, with site including the Otis Redding Foundation and Tubman Museums as well as the Douglass Theatre.

“For so long there have been charging deserts,” AAA Public Affairs Director Garrett Townsend said.

Townsend says only 2% of Black and brown people are EV owners and that a lack of charging stations is one of the main reasons why.

AAA hopes to increase that 2% figure with the road trip, citing how good the cars are for the environment and how owning an EV eliminates emissions control.

When it comes to the issue of the vehicles being too expensive, Townsend says there could be some breathing room for buyers with a $7,500 rebate and $135 million given to Georgia through President Biden’s Infrastructure Plan. While the process may take some time, Townsend says AAA is doing its part to tour cities that have deep Black history.
