MACON, Georgia (41NBC WMGT) – A new state law that went into effect on Monday is taking a deeper look at voters’ addresses. This is to make sure voters live where they say they do to make sure there’s no voter fraud.

In a packed Macon-Bibb Board of Elections special meeting Monday night, voters wanted to hear how the new law will impact the county’s voter roll.

“In no way am I accusing the voters involved intended to do wrong. The voter challenge allows us to get it right in bibb county,” David Sumrall, who’s challenging the addresses, said.

He’s the first to challenge BOE regarding some voters’ addresses. The law went into effect July 1st. The law takes out the Secretary of State from the Board of Elections. The law also said having a P.O. Box listed as a residency doesn’t qualify to vote in a jurisdiction.

Also, people who are registered to vote, but according to the National Change of Address database with the United States Post Office show you moved locations or out-of-state you’ll be asked to provide proof of residency.

Sumrall told the Board there are some voters who currently live in North Carolina and Florida. He said he’s trying to prevent voter fraud. The BOE said they suspect a voter moved-out-of-state they have to wait two federal election cycles since they’ve moved. The Board also didn’t vote on voters using P.O Boxes as addresses but will look at it on a case-by-case basis.
