When do you take your child to the doctor if they have the flu?
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) -Coliseum Medical Centers experts say you don’t always have to see a doctor if you start seeing flu symptoms in your child.
Most of the time the flu can be treated at home. If your child develops a fever, it should run its course within 3 to 4 days. Make sure to give them Tylenol or some sort of fever reliever. When the fever lasts longer than that and goes over 104, then you should consider making a trip to your pediatrician.
You should also make a trip if they already have medical issues.
“If your child has any underlying medical conditions whether it be asthma, cystic fibrosis, heart problems, seizure disorder, and they seem to be running a normal course of the flu, then it would be a good idea to go your doctor and get it checked out,” said Brandon Kirshner, MD with Coliseum Medical Centers.
Make sure your child is staying hydrated if they have the flu.
It normally lasts about a week, anything longer than that, or if you’re worried, see a doctor.
