Indie Music Festival aimed to bring community together, end violence

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A group of Macon residents want to put an end to violence, with music. The 3rd Annual Indie Music Festival is aimed to bring the community together.

“With so much negativity in the community. I think this is something that is definitely needed,” said Tyrus Turner, Indie Music Festival CEO. “Music is just something that everybody can get together on a common ground.”

That’s what Macon’s Indie Music Festival is aimed to do. It will be held at Central City Park in Macon, Saturday November 4th from 12PM – 7 PM.

“We know that the music is going to bridge, the hate, the discrimination,” said Turner.

In light of recent shootings resulting in homicides, Tyrus Turner and his friends want to put this show on for the community.

“Three homicides in one night is a lot in this city,” said organizer, Benjamin Hubbard. “It’s a tragedy and we definitely have to make the right steps in the right direction to stop these kinds of things from happening.”

Candance Towns was one of the victims found that day. She was 30-year-old transgender woman.

“This is the 25th transgender woman of color that has been murdered in the United States,” said Turner. “It just goes to show that there’s still many hateful people that are out there. No one deserves to be killed under any circumstance.”

Turner says Saturday will be a day to remember, and put the violence aside.

“Having a music festival like this and having the police force come and speak to some of people performing tomorrow, just shows we have a presence in Macon, Georgia,” said Turner. “Trying to make Macon Georgia a more safer place.”

The event is free and open to the public. You can bring lawn chairs/ blankets and coolers, no glass. More than 30 local entertainers will take the stage throughout the day.
