Cotton Avenue Coalition aims to revive downtown area

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – There’s a new organization in Macon that wants to preserve history in the downtown area.

The Cotton Avenue Coalition is focused on the Cotton Avenue district.

They want everyone to know why the buildings should be saved.

Some are hundreds of years old.

George Fadil Muhammad led a tour of the district this morning.

He spoke of the history and why it’s important.

“I’m honored and I’m really hopeful that our community will learn to appreciate what we have and preserve it, and draw inspiration from their knowledge.”

The group says Cotton Avenue is on Macon’s Fading Five list because there’s a lot of pressure to develop the area.

It’s known as a hub for black business, education and religion.
