Fall Special Olympics in Houston County

HOUSTON COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Cheers and smiles spread across Houston County High School’s field as kids participated in the Special Olympics.

Athletes from every middle school and high school in Houston county came out to play. The Special Olympics is hosted for students with intellectual disabilities to show off their sports skills. They competed in bocce, soccer and softball.
Dr. Brenda Arnett, puts the event on in the county three times a year. She’s been doing it for five years and the reward.

“It’s just a fun day to watch them get so excited,” said Dr. Arnett. “They hear all day long on the announcements about, you know the football team won or the basketball team won and now this gives them the chance to do the same thing.”

Over 300 students participated in this year’s events and the numbers just keep increasing.

Although athletes received ribbons for placing, everyone went home a winner.
