What’s Right With Our Schools: Northside High School preps students for college
WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Houston County teachers and administrators are getting their students ready for higher education.
“The best thing we can do is to get to know our students,” says Northside High School Principal, Dr. Greg Peavy.
He’s making sure all his students have what they need to successfully transition into college.
“They know they can come to me and hopefully they feel that way with the entire staff,” Peavy adds.
For some students, life after graduation can be a difficult adjustment.
“Northside is a very diverse school. I get to interact with different people that are not necessarily… they may not have the same interests that as I do but, you know, I get to interact with them and, you know, see different viewpoints on different things; on life in general. So, just the diversity of Northside is really going to help you in the long run,” says senior Michaela Heide.
Many students believe the guidance they get from their teachers will benefit them as they become more independent.
Senior Alexis Isom says, “The teachers know you and they know who you are. They work with you to help you become the student you are and mold you into the adults you’re supposed to be when you graduate.”
“You can go talk to the teachers and give you advice because they’ve been there before and they’ve done what we’ve done and they can give us greater advice,” adds Chad Desviens who is also a senior.
Senior Miranda Thigpen continues, “I know a college professor isn’t going to care if you’re not at school one day but my teachers have really prepared me for being responsible and making up my work on my own.”
Teachers and administrators have created a family environment to prepare students for college courses through the AP Program.
“These are actually college classes taught in the high school and they run from AP Art History all the way to AP Calculus,” explains Kim Stewart, who teaches at Northside.
Stewart adds these advanced placement classes will put students ahead once they get to college. They will not have to repeat classes if they’ve taken them while in high school.
“I not only have college credit but with the help of my teachers I have a full ride to school. So I’ve got college credit and I’ve got the rest of my schooling paid for so I definitely feel prepared to take the next step and go to college,” says Senior Chrissy Mays.
Teachers also offer study sessions at the school to prepare students for standardized tests.
