Residents still concerned about speeders in Macon’s Pendleton Homes

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Engineers in Macon-Bibb County say there’s no need for speed bumps in the Pendleton Homes neighborhood.

This comes after a group was concerned about drivers speeding up and down the road, putting the area’s children in danger.

“We’re not talking about speed. We’re talking about safety of our children,” Muhammad Sharif, a frustrated resident, said.

Neighbors say it’s still a problem — cars moving at high speeds in the neighborhood.

“Kids have almost gotten hit out here. People have ran into buildings — intoxicated and drunk,” Sharif continued.

He and other residents are disappointed about data from Macon-Bibb County engineers showing there weren’t enough speeders to warrant installing speed bumps.

“We looked at the road in a holistic area in terms of speed, safety, and things like that. It didn’t meet the criteria for speed humps, in terms of speed, but now we’re looking at it as a safety project for the kids and just make it safer,” Nigel Floyd, with Macon-Bibb County Traffic Engineering, said.

For months, people have passed out petitions and knocked on doors trying to get drivers to slow down.

“It’s about 1,000 vehicles a day that travel this road so out of that 1,000 vehicles, you can expect some to be speeding,” Floyd said.

According to the data, most drivers were actually following the speed limit.

“Most of the vehicles are actually abiding by the speed limit which is 25 miles per hour,” Floyd mentioned looking over the data.

Now the residents are approaching their concerns from an issue of safety, and say even if there aren’t many speeders, all it takes is one to change someone’s life forever.

“We’re going to do anything we need to do, whatever it takes, to get the job done,” Sharif said.

Residents now plan on taking their issue up with their commissioner – Larry Schlesinger – to see if it’s possible to get speed bumps installed in their neighborhood.
