Bibb deputies warn public of phone scam
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office wants the public to know about a recent officer impersonation phone scam.
A news release from the sheriff’s office says someone is calling citizens claiming to be from the sheriff’s office and demanding the citizen pay a fine for a warrant, ticket or other court matter.
The scammer asks the person to forward payment to them or asks them to purchase a type of payment card or other financial tool to pay the fine. The scammer will ask for a card number or other financial information.
The sheriff’s office stressed deputies, police officers, or court officers will never call any citizen asking for payment of any kind. Anyone who gets a call like this should immediately recognize it as a scam and call the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500.
