GA DOE: Macon Charter Academy will not close

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Georgia Department of Education will not be closing Macon Charter Academy.

In an email, Louis Erste from the state DOE said Bibb Schools Superintendent Dr. Curtis Jones told a DOE committee he’s in favor of MCA’s new plan. Brothers explained the plan is to work with a management company named Prestige to make the school’s business and governance processes more effective.

Erste said the Bibb BOE and Georgia DOE have all agreed to move forward with this plan. MCA will need to give monthly updates to both parties. The state DOE will decide whether to remove the school from probation in June.

Brothers said Prestige costs about $15,000 a month based on average student enrollment. He added MCA has enough money to pay for the service because the school recently reduced it’s staffing and service costs.

MCA’s board is finalizing a contract with the management firm.
