Georgia Kids STEM Day held at Museum of Aviation

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – “It’s cool to make mistakes, as long as you keep trying,”

That’s the lesson Wayne Sutherland says he wants his daughter, Savannah, to learn. The nine-year-old was one of nearly 100 students who attended the fourth annual Kids STEM event Saturday.

Her dad was one of the 18 career mentors for the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math or (STEM) workshops held at the Museum of Aviation.

“It’s really important to me for all the kids to get exposed to science and technology,” he says.

Savannah was among the second through fifth graders who studied gravity, robotics and rocketry in a variety of STEM workshops.

She now has a much better idea of what her father does as a United States Air Force Air Traffic Controller.

“I finally got to see what my dad does when he goes to some places,” she says.

Savannah wasn’t the only student excited about STEM event. Seven-year-old Alex Rosebor was too.

“We were trying to like make gravity and trying to do cool tricks,” explained Rosebor. “Sometimes it would go down straight, sometimes it would go down and be so close, but it would like go to the other side. Sometimes it wouldn’t even go. It would just not work.”

Melissa Spalding is the Director of Education for the Museum of Aviation.

“We like to offer programs throughout the year to really encourage students to enjoy math and science and see what careers are really available to them,” she said.
