Deputies searching for black SUV that hit and killed a man in Macon

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A man is dead after a hit and run accident near the corner of Pio Nono Avenue and Carroll Street.

Witnesses tell Bibb County sheriff’s deputies a black Cadillac Escalade with a Florida license plate hit 38-year-old Antonial White and kept driving northbound on Pio Nono Avenue. It happened Sunday night around 9:00.

White was walking across the street with his dog. The animal was hit by a car. After White went to check on his dog, that’s when the dark colored SUV hit him.

John Hillman’s barbershop is on the corner of Pio Nono and Carroll. He says he’s seen multiple people hit and killed on the busy road.

“I would like to see better street lighting because you have some dark spots out here,” Hillman said.

Macon-Bibb Commissioner Elaine Lucas is part of the city’s pedestrian fatality review board. She says it’s time to research safer ways for people who travel down the city’s busy roads.

“We as a committee will work to develop strategies to address safety especially in those areas where we continue to have deaths,” Lucas said.

She says it’ll take more than putting up a light in a dark area to fix the problem, it’ll take education.

“People use those areas for walking, for biking, jogging all of those kinds of things,” said Lucas.

Hillman is hopeful a change happens, so Macon can cut back on its pedestrian deaths.

“If we can make some improvements on crossing the street, then we’ll make it safer for the community,” he said.

According to the Macon-Bibb Animal Shelter, the dog has a broken ankle, but is in stable condition.

White’s family has been notified.

This is an ongoing investigation. Deputies say the black SUV should have damage to its front. If you see this vehicle, call the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500.
