Bibb County Sheriff’s Office warns citizens of IRS scam

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a phone scam that impersonates the Internal Revenue Service.

According to a news release, scammers will demand money and tell you if you don’t pay, you will be arrested.

The Sheriff’s Office says the IRS has procedures for those with tax issues. If you receive a similar call, do not give out any payment information.

Tips to recognize the scam:

        -The scammer demands immediate payment
        -Demand payment of taxes without giving you an opportunity to question
        the amount they say you owe
        -Ask for debit or credit card numbers over the phone
        -Demand you use a specific payment method for your taxes
        -Make threats to have you arrested by local law enforcement if you do
        not pay
