Macon-Bibb pools to open Memorial Day weekend

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – If you’re looking for a way to beat the heat this summer, you can take a dip in one of Macon-Bibb’s pools.

All five pools are scheduled to open this weekend. The cost to get in is $1, with an additional $1 to use the slide at the East Macon Community Center.

The East Macon Community Center is open Tuesday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. The Bloomfield Community Center is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Frank Johnson Community Center is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Booker T. Washington Community Center is open Tuesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. The Memorial Gymnasium is open Tuesday and Thursday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 3 p.m.

All pools will be closed on Sundays.

The pools are only open a few days a week because the county needs more lifeguards. The county’s aquatic manager says if it hires more lifeguards, it is possible the pools could open more days of the week.

“The requirement right now is a high school diploma, GED, or you can be 16 with a work permit and then you have to be a certified lifeguard in first aid and lifeguard training,” Robert Walker, the Macon-Bibb Community Center and Aquatics Manager, said.

For questions about the lifeguard position and training, contact the Parks and Recreation Department at (478) 751-9280. To apply for the position, visit www.maconbibb.us and click on the “Employment” tab.
