Wesleyan College holds candlelight vigil to remember the Nepal earthquake victims

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Wesleyan College held a candlelight vigil Monday evening to remember those who lost their lives in the devastating Nepal earthquake.  Event organizers planned the ceremony to bring awareness to what is happening overseas because some of their students still have family in the Asian country.

There was a prayer and an open mic session for anyone who wanted to express their thoughts on the tragedy.  A Wesleyan College student tells 41NBC she was relieved when she got a call from her family, who lives in Katmandu, saying they’re okay.

“I’m privileged to say that my family is fine.  They have a house to live in, they have food to eat, they are good.  They’re not safe, but they’re fine.  At least physically they are emotionally, I can’t say, but physically they are fine,” recalls Sonali Poudel.

The earthquake hit the capitol city on Saturday.  Citizens are still feeling after shocks.  People are sleeping in parks to avoid their homes.  So far more than 3,000 people have died.  Authorities say the death toll is still rising.
