Nearly 360 eligible for Macon-Bibb early retirement incentive program

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A little more than 360 Macon-Bibb employees are eligible for an early retirement incentive program.

Leaders are continuing to look into ways they can save the county money, as they work to cut the budget as mandated with consolidation. The program is geared toward helping employees retire with the most money they can.

Commissioner Gary Bechtel says although there aren’t any options in place yet, the county is moving in the right direction.

“The goal is to try to find some formulas, some cash, in terms of buying years, things like that, to try to incentivize those that are either at or near retirement to make a choice,” Bechtel said.

These talks come as the county is looking to create an equal tax rate for residents across the community. That’s roughly $8-$10 million.

Commissioners are hoping enough people sign up for the program, which would save the county money.
