UPDATE: One Macon-Bibb firefighter dead, 5 injured during Fairview Drive house fire

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Macon-Bibb firefighter died in the line of duty and five others were injured while battling a house fire on Fairview Drive Wednesday.

According to a news release from Macon-Bibb County, the blaze started around 5:45 p.m. The house was fully engulfed by the time firefighters arrived on the scene minutes later.

Two engines, two aerials, a Battalion Chief and rescue unit responded to the scene. All of the occupants were already out of the house.

The initial unit entered the home. About an hour later, the unit was inside the front door when the floor collapsed and several firefighters fell into the basement.

Six officers were sent to the Medical Center, Navicent Health, including one that had been trapped for a “significant amount of time.”

The news release states 46-year-old Lt. Randy Parker passed away in the line of duty. Parker served the Macon-Bibb community for more than 20 years.

Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones tells 41NBC 59-year-old Battalion Chief Steven Stafford was airlifted to the Augusta Burn Center in Augusta, and 34-year-old Adam Michie and 46-year-old Ferrell Cromer were taken to the burn center by ambulance. Jones says 28-year-old Ben Bollinger and 27-year-old Matt Couey are in stable condition at the Medical Center, Navicent Health.

According to the news release, two of the officers who were sent to Augusta suffered from smoke inhalation and the others had burns on his hand and smoke inhalation.

Fire trucks still lined the block of the Bloomfield neighborhood hours after the blaze was reported.

Neighbors tell 41NBC’s Alexa Rodriguez they saw black smoke and huge flames coming from the home.

“We were sitting in the den and I heard this loud explosion. I said somebody is shooting. Then after that loud explosion, I heard two more pops,” Grace Fennelle said.

“You couldn’t really tell that there was a fire, couldn’t see any smoke or anything. So I just traveled on home and I spoke to my sister, who was already at the house and she says oh, I can smell smoke and I can see a little bit of smoke,” Teresa Shakespeare said.

Bibb County sheriff’s deputies, EMS, and fire officials responded to the scene.

No word on what caused the fire.

The Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are assisting local law enforcement with the investigation.

The city is asking the entire community to keep Lt. Parker and the families of the other officers injured tonight in your thoughts and prayers.
