Historic Fort Hawkins Open Every Day for Cherry Blossom Festival

If you’re in the mood for a history lesson of Macon, Marty Willett,Chairman of the Fort Hawkins Commission, will tell you everything you want to know.

But he won’t just stand there and say it to you, he’ll reenact it, and put on a show. 

According to Willett, “sharing history is my caffeine.” 

Willett has been working hard to get the fort ready for the Cherry Blossom Festival, because he is doing something he has never done before. The fort will be open every day for the festival this year. Willett says he hopes the added exposure during the festival will draw more people in to the fort.

The fort surprises visitors by having reconstructed tools, toys, pots and pans, and even an archaeological dig.

Fort Hawkins was built in 1806 on Macon’s east side, so the soldiers could overlook the Muskogee Creek Tribe.
