Wilkinson County looking to get back on track after first losing season since 2007

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – It was the first losing season for the Wilkinson County Warriors since 2007, with their 4-7 mark being a blemish that head coach James Hagins would like to forget heading into 2014.

“We [were] weak at our secondary,” Hagins said about his team’s sub-par 2013 result, “The corners were weak… people [were] passing on us real bad.”

Coach Hagins’ team will be heading into the new year with a new quarterback, Tylan Grable, a 6’3″, 190 lbs. freshman that may benefit from being behind an offense that’s returning six starters. Hagins believes having a veteran line will give Grable the extra few seconds needed to get the ball away and down the field.

Hagins also believes his defense will be able to hold their own, returning five starters. Last season they averaged 26.9 points per game, yet still managed three shutouts.

The road for the Warriors will be slightly different this year with the private schools from Macon being added to their schedule. Despite the unfamiliar opponents, Hagins feels it won’t necessarily matter, “… because most of them are running the spread offense. Most of the teams that we played last year ran the wing-T and then ran the spread.”

Wilkinson County’s first game will be on August 29th, against the Central Chargers.
