100th abandoned and dilapidated house demolished

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The 100th home was demolished in Macon-Bibb county.
The last house came crashing down as part of Mayor Robert Reichert’s campaign to rid the city of dilapidated homes.
mayor reichert knocked down the wall of the 100th house to be destroyed as part of the city’s five by five campaign.

He says it cost anywhere from $15,000 to nearly $30,000 to demolished the abandoned and dilapidated houses.

City officials say by tearing down the dilapidated houses they are getting rid of places for illegal activity.

“It brings hope to the neighborhoods,” says Mayor Reichert. “It eliminates a hazard, it eliminates a location where all kinds of illicit activity, prostitution, crime, drugs and everything else.”

The mayor says the demolition project was so successful they are looking to increase it next year, by knocking down 125 abandoned and dilapidated houses.
