Warner Robins city council to build new fire station in the city

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A new fire station may be in the works in Warner Robins. The city’s mayor and council have decided to go ahead with plans for what will be the seventh active fire station in the city.

In a few months, the Highway 96 area could very well affect hundreds of people in the Warner Robins area….
That’s if Mayor Randy Toms has any say about it…
He says the city is need of a new fire station along highway 96 near Unity Baptist Church to help keep the community safer.
“I think it’s critical that we get a fire station built out there pretty soon. There’s a lot of Warner Robins out there and I think a lot of people don’t realize that we have,” Toms said.
It takes fire engines from the two closest stations quite some time to get out to that particular area, and the longer the wait time in response to a fire could mean life and death.
“It takes quite awhile for those trucks to get there and I’ve actually ridden on those trucks from both of those locations.”
Highway 96 the ideal location Mayor Toms has in mind to build a new fire station in the city. Right now response times to get there are at about 10-12 minutes, Toms wants to get it down to 3 to 5.
“I know what response times mean in structure fires. I know that a fire doubles in size every minute in a structure. So I know that the response time is the key to good fire service,” Toms said.
Good fire service also means a better ISO rating for the city, which could play big in terms of home and business owners’ insurance rates.
Toms thinks the fire station could also bring business to the area…which means more dollars to the international city.
“What we think we will happen is when we get the fire station built out there and some roads going in place out in the area, is you’re going to see some development come in as far as commercial development and some more  growth out there in that area,” Toms said.

There’s already money set aside from the 2012 SPLOST to build and fully staff the station.
