Georgia Power Looks to Solar Energy

Georgia Power and the Electric Power Research Institute are testing out a free way to run electricity into your homes and businesses using the Sun’s rays.

Georgia Power is conducting an 18 month project to determine if the State’s climate can handle solar energy.

Macon is one of 7 cities that had the solar panels installed; Rome, Valdosta, Augusta, Columbus, Savannah, and Conley are the other cities.

7 panels were installed in Macon last December. 5 of the 3 by 5 feet panels are along Broadway St. The panels produce about 200 watts of electricty.

The goal of the project is to reduce Georgia Power’s dependence on power plants. Georgia Power says once the project is complete the solar panels will stay in place, and the company will continue monitoring long term results.
