Waern Named PBC Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
MARTINEZ, Ga. (GCSU RELEASE) – Freshman Anton Waern (Taby, Sweeden) of Georgia College has been named the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Men’s Tennis Player of the Week. Waern was the only Georgia College men’s tennis player to go undefeated in two back-to-back road matches for the No. 11 Bobcats.
He defeated Abel Acuna of Georgia Southwestern State University in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2 in his first singles match on Saturday, Feb. 22. Waern also won his doubles match against GSW with sophomore partner Taylor Powell (Martinez, Ga.) in helping the Bobcats to an 8-1 win. The pairing defeated Moore and Marshall by a score of 8-5.
In his second singles match of the week, Waern defeated Danilo Sardelli of No. 10 Columbus State University in three sets, 6-0, 6-7, 10-2 on Sunday, Feb. 23. Waern and Powell were victorious again in doubles, this time defeating the Cougars’ Trebuhov and Kierkus by a score of 9-7. Waern was part of two of the Bobcats’ three points in a 6-3 loss at Columbus State.
The Georgia College men’s tennis team (3-2) returns to action Sunday, March 2 against Flagler College at the Centennial Center Tennis Facility at noon.
