Five Years and Still No Answers After Pleasant Hill Neighborhood Unsolved Murder

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Five years ago to the day, one Macon family is still looking for answers as to who killed their loved one, Sophia Denmark.

She was found dead in her home on Walnut street.

“She was so much fun, she would light up a place. She just loved everybody,” Ethel Austin, Denmark’s grandmother said.

All she has is memories.

She was coming back from a birthday dinner in Atlanta when she found out her granddaughter, Sophia Denmark was killed at her home five years ago on Walnut Street in the Pleasant Hill neighborhood.

“We hadn’t been able to talk about it amongst ourselves, it was just so hurtful, every day it feels like it just happened it never gets old,” Austin said.

All she wants is justice for her “Sophie.”

She thought she had it, when an arrest was made a few years back, but police released the suspect after clues showed there was no connection to the murder.

Now Austin is back at a dead end, and she wants answers, and feels like nothing is being done to find out what happened.

“There’s still things happening. Case files stay here, murder cases are always open. They’re never closed until someone has been adjudicated, which means they’ve been arrested,” Lt. Shermaine Jones with the Bibb Sheriff’s Office said.

Invetigators are starting the case over from scratch, seeing if there is any more clues that will come up.

“I just pray everyday and thank God that he allowed her to be with us for 27 years,” Austin said.

And all Ethel wants is a peace of mind, to find out who did this to her granddaughter.

“It’s not going to bring her back, but we’ll have some closure to know who did this and why would they do that to such a precious life,” Austin said.

Ethel says she still has hope in finding the person responsible for Sophia Denmark’s death, and is even offering a $3000 reward for anyone with information. If you can help in this case, you’re urged to call the Bibb Sheriff’s Office, or Crimestoppers.
