Inside the Huddle of Macon’s Own Rugby Team

The game of rugby is not for the faint of heart. It’s stick your cleats in the ground and find out who’s the stronger man kind of sport. Rugby at times looks like a medieval battle. Although the sport is uncommon in middle Georgia, one group of guys from Macon play to win.

“You gotta keep going ok. You gotta make that tackle. You gotta keep going. It’s like a slug fest between two boxers,” said Mike Dee, president of Macon Love Rugby.

The rugby team of middle Georgia name themselves Macon Love, but there’s nothing lovely about grown men colliding at full speed.

“You might be winning for a while but all of the sudden the tide changes and you got to be able to change with the tide, you gotta go in for that knock out punch. Same thing with rugby one minute you don’t have the ball the next minute you got it and now you’ve got to run. You might be tired but you gotta run,” said Dee.
