Macon School Kids Experience Black History By ‘Living History’ Tour
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Today, Macon school kids got out of the classroom, and went back in time for a first-hand lesson in black history.
The Tubman Museum hosted the ‘Living History’ tour for dozens of children to celebrate and learn more about black history during the month of February.
On the tour, children saw actor and actresses portraying historical figures, such as Josephine Baker and Frederick Douglass.
Director of Education for the museum, Tonya Parker says this experience brings kids a lesson, they can’t learn from history books.
“I have a heart for people learning, because I know at one point Africans and African Americans were denied the right to learn to read and write,” Parker says, “It’s important that we do these things to continue to educate ourselves as much as possible, and to share what we know with others, because knowledge really is power.”
Parker added it is important to share black history not only through the month of February, but all year long.
