Macon-Bibb Fire Female Recruits Ready to Battle Blazes

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Women are proving it is not just a man’s world anymore.
It is becoming more common for ladies to join the ranks of police and fire departments across the country.
The Macon-Bibb County Fire department is no different.

There are three new female fire recruits among the latest class of the fire Department. The ladies are taking part in an intensive 20 week training to become fire fighters.

The fire recruits are in their third week of training. They have 12 weeks of fire training and eight weeks of Emergency Medical Technical training.

Deanna Scott says her family encourages her.

“They’re very excited,” says Scott. “I’m the first one to be able to do something like this. So, I’m just looking to see how it turns out.”

Only seven female fire fighters are on the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department, which has 400 male fire fighters.

Lt. Phillip Adams says the women bring something special to the fire department. Adams says the ladies on the fire Department have proved to be very good firefighters.

The three female recruits say they are looking forward to graduating, and bringing more females to the department.
