Fire at Downtown Macon Hotel

The Macon-Bibb County Fire Department is investigating a hotel fire in downtown Macon. The blaze started Friday just after 7pm at the Riverview Hotel at the intersection of Third Street and Walnut Street. Firefighters had to make an aggressive interior attack on the second floor in order to contain the heavy smoke.

Fire Chief Marvin Riggins says a couple of people are being treated for smoke inhalation.

“There were numerous other occupants in this facility. We have been making sure that we’re getting a count of all of them, getting them out of the building; we are evacuating the entire building at this point. We are making sure that all those people are accounted for and taken care of.”

The fire was contained to one room and officials say someone was smoking. Chief Riggins tells us preliminary investigations show this may be the cause of the blaze. ?
