Houston County Special Needs Students Participate in the ‘Olympics’

KATHLEEN, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Today, dozens of Houston County children with special needs played in the ‘Houston County Special Olympics Winter Games’ for the very first time.

The event was held earlier today at Veterans High School where more than 40 volunteers played low-level activities in the Special Olympics.

Activities included hula hoop, bowling and the crowd favorite-basketball.

Event coordinator and P.E. specialist for Houston County, Brenda Arnett, believes this event builds self-esteem and makes all kids feel included.

“I want them to leave having a good time and maybe to have met somebody,” Arnett says, “It is so important for them to be in there with those regular kids, and to get that from them. That’s just it…makes everybody feel good.”

The festivities will continue tomorrow, January 10th at 9:30 a.m. at Veterans High School for 6th-12th grade students.
