Upgrades Coming to Rozar Park in Perry

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Residents in Perry will see upgrades to one of their local parks in a few months. City Council met earlier this week to give an update on Rozar Park.

Changes are coming to Frank Rozar Memorial Park quick, fast, and in a hurry.

Perry city officials are ready to go. They’ve signed off on a bid to upgrade the park.

The biggest concerns are the tennis courts. City leaders think the cost for maintenance and upkeep for them is too high. So they’ve chosen to remove them.

City manager Lee Gilmour says another reason for the removal of the courts is safety.

“In addition to that, there have been a declining number of people coming in to use the tennis courts and we don’t run any programs on there,” Gilmour said.

“You have the baseball and the foul balls coming off, and they disrupt the tennis players. Plus there just seems to be an inherent conflict between when the tennis people like to come out and the practices with baseball and with soccer,” he said.

Executive Secretary for Rozar Park, Nancy Graham thinks the move will actually bring more people in the park.

“It’s going to give a central location for all soccer games as well as give a green space for any other activities that we deem necessary for the future of Rozar Park,” Graham said.

Other changes that are being paid for using 2012 penny sales tax dollars include upgrades to the walking trail around the park. Officials are asking for the community’s help to name the trail.

Graham thinks it’s the perfect opportunity to get people involved.

“I think that it’s great because they take ownership more when they’re involved and I think they’ll be proud to see something that they had input in,” Graham said.
