Salvation Army Steps Up During Cold Weather
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Shivering temperatures outside mean more coats, blankets, and a warm heater.
But for some Macon residents, those basic necessities are tough to come by.
For those without homes this winter, the challenge becomes even harder, but that’s where the Salvation Army steps in.
The cold weather is blowing across Middle Georgia.
“it’s bitterly cold at night especially.”
Most have a warm place to sleep, but what about those who don’t?
The Salvation Army is known for giving, but it’s nights like tonight in Macon that they step up their efforts.
“With the temperature like it is outside right now, emergency level is 40 degrees,” said Kevin Lyles. “When it hits that point, and that includes wind chill–below that with a wind chill–then we are able to provide shelter to more people.”
Regional Development Director at the Salvation Army, Kevin Lyles, says the fire marshal normally limits the number of people that can stay at the shelter, but on especially cold nights, that limit goes way up.
“Normally, again, we house probably an average of 105ish people a night, so now if you add 40 if you add 60 if you add 70–so all the sudden now you’ve got to feed them in the morning,” said Lyles. “There’s gotta be people here to help put the mats in the right place, put them out–try and find blankets for them.”
Blankets are usually in short supply, but the shelter finds a way to keep everyone warm especially with the help of donations.
“It means we have a community that cares,” said Lyles. “It means that we have a group of dedicated people who are here with the salvation army that care about the people of this community. That care about people when they’re homeless and in need so it’s a great service for our community. It’s valuable, and it’s much-needed. There’s really a greater need than we’re able to even to provide.”
Lyles said the Salvation Army desperately needs blankets, soap, and shampoo.
Monetary donations are always appreciated as well.
