Macon Church Hosts Bike-A-Rama
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The gift of giving continues this holiday season, and one Macon church is hoping to wheel in some Christmas cheer for kids across the city.
It’s never too early to give a kid a gift for Christmas–especially a bike. The multicolored, sparkling bikes greeted the kids just outside of the Lizzie Chapel Baptist Church, and Santa *may have had something to do with it.
For James Taylor, it’s carrying on a friends legacy.
“My best friend back in ’06 passed, and we used to give out bikes,” said Taylor, the event organizer. “We’d give out a couple of bikes here, a couple of bikes there. I just saw an opportunity that it would bea great honor to keep his memory alive.”
Nearly 100 bikes all in a row, and ready to be ridden by kids who they think truly deserve it.
The 4th annual William Tar Beach Bike-a-rama gave the Lizzie Chapel Baptist Church a chance to make Christmas merry for a group of kids.
“And that’s our biggest goal is to make sure that some of these kids that probably wouldn’t get anything for Christmas,” said Taylor. “We give them to a lot of charitable organizations and kids–the ones that are really in need. That’s the biggest joy that I get out of it.”
“(Why do you like getting a bike?) Because I love Christmas and Santa Clause…because it’s pink and I wanna ride,” said Mauree, who received a bicycle.
As they wheeled their bikes away, the children also received a snack and a Merry Christmas from church volunteers.
“There are a lot of children who don’t get anything and won’t have a merry Christmas and today–it brings a little joy into their life,” said parent Cynthia Parker.
And there’s nothing better than that.
