Local Stores Prepare for Small Business Saturday

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Dozens of small businesses around middle Georgia are getting ready to open their doors for Small Business Saturday.

Amanda’s Cakery has been open for almost three years, and has built a loyal customer base.

Cupcakes, cookies, and wedding cakes….you can find it all.

The cakery, right in the heart of downtown Macon, has become a staple thanks to its owner, Amanda Meadows.

“We have a storefront of cupcakes you can come in and get. We make cupcakes, holiday cakes, and wedding cakes,” Meadows said.

Amanda’s Cakery is one of hundreds of local businesses taking part in Small Business Saturday.

It’s a day encouraging people to shop locally during the holiday season.

“It’s a great way for people to come down and do some Christmas shopping which we all have to do. Then also see some of the sites, eat at some of the restaurants, hear some of our live music, and explore things,” Mechel McKinley, with Main Street Macon, said.

She says stores run specials and promotions all to bring money back into the local economy.

“The employ people locally, and so we really want to help them in every way that we can to be stronger and better, and to encourage people to shop there,” McKinley said.

Amanda’s Cakery has participated for the past three years.

She and her staff say they want to make customers dreams come true one layer of icing at a time.

“They can go online. We have our Facebook and our website where we have pictures and also a few prices of where we have our holiday cakes,” Leslie Bowker, an employee at Amanda’s Cakery, said.

“What happens is they’ll give us some ideas, and we’ll draw up a sketch and execute it and they just have to give us an idea of what they want, when they want it, how many people they need it to feed and we’ll make it happen,” Meadows said.
