MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Middle Georgia leaders along with military veterans are bringing a unique flag to Macon.

Officials broke ground near I-475 and Thomaston Road at a ceremony on Thursday morning, honoring veterans.

The interchange near there will be named “Veterans of All Wars Interchange.”

Plans are to hoist a 228 foot tall flagpole that’ll hold an American flag that weighs more than 1,000 pounds.

Local leaders say the flag and pole combination will be the largest free standing flagpole in the country.

It will take about six months to complete the project.

The pole will display the American flag along with a second flag honoring prisoners of war and missing in action veterans.

The flagpole and the flag are being donated by the American Legion.
