Mayor Joins High-Speed Rail Task Force

The United States Conference of Mayors has appointed a Macon native to serve as co-chair of the High Speed Rail Task Force.

Mayor Robert Reichert will be working alongside Mayor Buddy Dyer of Orlando. He hopes to replicate the progress of the high speed railway from Orlando to Tampa in Georgia, between Macon and Atlanta.

He says, “With Mercer University, the Medical Center of Central Georgia and downtown Macon being in close proximity we can have that walkable urban environment connected by mass transit to other communities in Middle Georgia and to Atlanta and from Atlanta to the rest of the world.”

Mayor Reichert has been a member of the US Conference of Mayors for the past three years and serves on the Transportation Committee. He believes a high speed rail link between Macon and Atlanta would demonstrate the benefits of mass transit.

He says, “It would be clean, safe and affordable – while reducing pollution, lessening the dependence on foreign oil and providing economic opportunities.”
