Dogs Killed and Beaten by Vandals at Animal Shelter

MACON,Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Volunteers of a local dog shelter are working to restore some of the animals after the facility was broken into Wednesday.

Vandals made their way inside a fence surrounding All About Animals dog shelter, located at 101 Riverside Drive in Macon.

One of the volunteers arrived at the shelter around 8:30 a.m., and found several dogs out of the dog pens fighting.

Volunteers at the All About Animals shelter, say they are devastated. When they arrived at they found their main gate broken into, and dog pens unlocked and opened.

They also found three dogs dead, six dogs severely injured and three other dogs missing. They say it is all the aftermath of vandalism and dog fighting.

“They were all sweet dogs,” said Lacey Templeton. “They had been given a second chance, so I mean we worked with them everyday. We feed them and played with them and watched them. It’s just a shame.”

Volunteers spent the day taking care of the injured dogs which they say proved to be difficult because some dogs showed signs of trauma. A veterinarian treated dogs that suffered severe injuries.

“This is a set back for the dogs,” said Jason M. Cheyney. “We’re trying to get these dogs adopted in the community, and, some idiots come in here and stage dog fights and now they are scared.”

Templeton says there was nearly $2,000 worth of damage at the facility. But that is nothing compared to the emotional damage the volunteers say they endured after losing three of their animals.

“Flapjack, and Jake and Butler,” said Templeton, as she recalled the names of the dogs that were killed as a result of the incident. “Butler only had three legs so he was helpless.”

Cheney says the shelter will need the love and support to recover from the dog fighting damage.

“We’re going to need money, donations to help fund the care for the dogs that are here plus now we’re looking at some security issues as to correct this in the future.”

Volunteers at the All About Animals shelter say they have been at the Riverside Drive location, for three years without any type of incident.

They along with Macon police are asking anyone with information, about the break-in to call crimestoppers, at 1-877-68-crime.
