Car Theft Increases in Macon
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – With the holidays around the corner, crime rates are expected to increase, especially car thefts.
Detective Al Cloud with Macon Police says his staff has been monitoring auto thefts over the past few years, and they discovered a pattern in the type of cars thieves target.
“You’re looking at the Honda Accords, Honda Civics, Toyota Camrys, Ford F-150, Chevrolet C-1500, and Mitsubishis…,” Cloud says, “…these are the easier cars to break into, and steal.”
According to the Macon Police Department public information officer Jami Gaudet, Bibb County detectives are seeing a rise in theft. Since last month, the number of stolen cars in the area jumped from 360 to 425.
Cloud says he receives five to 12 new reports daily, and his investigation is ongoing.
“According to what kind of car it is, and what the purpose of them stealing it, they go to chop shops, joy rides to go out and commit other crimes, beer runs and burglaries,” says Cloud.
His advices to all automotive drivers, “keep your doors locked, and be aware of your surroundings.”
