Mercer Hires Lamb as Head Football Coach

The Mercer Bears football program now has a head coach. Bobby Lamb, former head coach of Furman, will take over the reigns of the newly reinstated program.

Lamb spent 27 years at FurmanUniversity, first as a player, then assistant coach and finally served as head coach for eight seasons.

Last November the board of trustees voted to reinstate its football program. Mercer halted the sport back in 1941 because of the war.

The Bears will hit the field in September of 2013.The school plans to be part of the Division I, Pioneer Football League.

It’s a football-only conference that doesn’t offer athletic scholarships to players. Coach Lamb says it’s good to be back home in the peach state.

“I have so many ties in this state with my dad, and my brother. When I was at Furman we certainly recruited this state heavily. So I’m excited about the opportunity to come back to Macon and get to work. And make Macon proud, make Mercer proud. We can do something special here,” said Lamb.

Lamb said he hopes to have the foundation of his coaching staff in place by this summer.
