Tillman Remains Candidate for Commission After Board’s Decision
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Al Tillman will remain a candidate for Macon-Bibb County Commission after the Board of Elections voted 4-0 on Tuesday.
After a unanimous vote, Macon – Bibb County Commission Candidate Al Tillman says he’s ready to focus on the things he says matters most…the people.
“We’ve got to get back to doing the people’s business, we’ve got to help people find jobs, we’ve got to be able to move our community forward,” Tillman said.
Tuesday the Macon – Bibb County Board of Elections decided there wasn’t enough proof showing that Tillman lived in a different district from the one he was running in.
“This is simply a waste of taxpayers’ time and money. These shenanigans have to stop,” Tillman said. “I would ask my opponent and his friends to stay out of the race and for my opponent to debate me openly and honestly and when we disagree lets be fair.”
The decision came after Macon City Councilman Henry Gibson claimed Tillman lives in District 8, where he co-owns a home with his wife, but Tillman provided photos, bank statements, and even powers bill showing that he’d lived in an apartment in District 9, where he’s running, since June.
Gibson is basing his claims from a homeowner’s tax credit that’s filed in the beginning of each year where he says Tillman’s address was in District 8.
Gibson, who isn’t running for a commission seat in district 9, says Tillman is trying to twist the law. Gibson says if Tillman can move to run for an elected office, so can he.
“We’ll follow the same direction as Al Tillman, since they made it the law and whether they wanted to set a precedent or not, the precedent has been set.”
Gibson has 10 days to appeal to Bibb County Superior Court.
