UPDATE: Warner Robins Police Still Searching for Russell Elementary Intruder

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A Warner Robins elementary school was locked down for a couple of hours Friday morning after a suspicious man walked into the building.

It was a late start to the school day as buses and parents dropped off students at Russell Elementary. The school was locked down for two hours while Warner Robins police searched the campus for an intruder.

Ii was worried, I was like I don’t want her going to school today until we find out exactly what’s going on,” parent Danny Evans said.

Police say a suspicious man walked into the school around 7:30 a.m. Students normally aren’t allowed to enter the building until 7:45 and school starts at 8:30. Houston County School Superintendent Dr. Robin Hines says a teacher spotted him and the school immediately went into code red.

“I heard them holler code red over the intercom and they just locked everything down. Police were here in well under two minutes and they were everywhere,” parent Micah Britt said. “I saw assault rifles, police dogs, everything coming out.”

“It was scary, especially with all the stuff that’s going on in schools nowadays. The last couple of years with shootings, the kidnappings,” Evans said.

No one was allowed in or out of the school. Witnesses told police the man ran away, but to be safe, officers thoroughly searched the campus to make sure he didn’t come back.

“Once the law enforcement had done the things that they needed to do we lifted the code red and got the students over here and we’re trying to have as normal a day as possible,” Dr. Hines said.

The superintendent adds safety is the school district’s number one priority.

“We’ll certainly as always review our processes and make sure that we’re doing the right thing,” Dr. Hines said.

Parents say they can rest easy knowing the school and law enforcement reacted quickly and their kids are in safe hands.

“Peace of mind. It definitely made me feel better about it that they were as concerned as they were,” Britt said.

No arrests have been made in this investigation. Police are still determining why the man was at the school, but WRPD did say in a news release officers responded to the school in “reference to suspicious activity.”

WRPD spokeswoman Tabitha Pugh says the intruder did not approach any kids and no one was hurt. Officers will be at Russell Elementary and patrolling the surrounding area looking for the suspect.

Officers are looking for a black man 25 to 30 years old. He is 5’10” tall and was last seen wearing black pants and a green jacket. If you see him, you’re asked to call 911.
