Macon’s 5X5 Program Promoting Fire Safety

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The third round of the City of Macon’s 5X5 program kicked off earlier this month. On Monday, firefighters took to Dorothy Avenue in Lynmore Estates to promote fire safety.

They painted house numbers on the curbs so they can spot addresses faster in emergencies. Firefighters also went door to door to check on smoke alarms and give out free ones.

“We are taking a step by step approach to improving neighborhoods in every Ward of the City by focusing efforts of our departments and engaging the communities,” Macon Mayor Robert Reichert said in a statement. “Working together in a focused and deliberate manner, we can have a tremendous impact of the appearance and future of our City.

Five by five is a program where city departments focus on a five block area for five weeks. City officials also strives to engage the community by asking for assistance on projects and hosting events to build a sense of ownership in the improvement process.

“The process stresses coordination among City Council, the community, the Mayor’s Office, and City Departments,” Keith Moffettt with the City of Macon said in a statement. “The goal is not only to clean up portions of the city; we want to bring people together.”
