Bibb Superintendent Excited About First Day
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Monday was the first day of school for kids in Bibb County, which also was the first day for interim Superintendent Dr. Steve Smith.
Lockers, book bags, new school supplies, and new outfits.
That’s all a part of the first day of school in Bibb County.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Steve Smith spent his first school day walking the halls, meeting students and teachers.
He’s ready to make a few changes to the “Macon Miracle,” a reform program developed by former Bibb Superintendent Romain Dallemand, but says things will take time.
“It is our long range strategic plan, I prefer to just refer to it as what it is, it’s a long range strategic plan…95% of what’s in that strategic we will continue to do,” Smith said.
Smith says he’ll take some detours on the other fiver percent.
“Discipline in schools…I think we need to have a firmer approach towards discipline. If you don’t have discipline it’s difficult to teach in schools,” Smith said. “We need to do something to improve our technology, technology is great when it works, but it doesn’t always work and I’ve heard so many complaints about our technology being up and down.”
He stopped at Southwest High School in Macon where the graduation rate for the school in below 40%.
He’s looking to fix that too.
Smith has help from people like new principal Dr. Tanzy Kilcrease and students like Braxton Williams.
The sophomore and drum major realized where his school stood and knew something needed to be done about it. Now he’s confident more and more of his peers will walk across the stage.
After Dr. Smith’s day at the schools, he met with staffers to go over transportation and to see if there is any overcrowding in classrooms.
He says if he needs to, he’ll bring on more teachers, but he doesn’t want to misuse any tax payer money.
